why 음악회?  because after last year’s K-Pop Night, and this year’s Super Show 3 (2 times, no less!), I just can’t get enough.  So I’m headed to this year’s Korean Music Wave!  I’m so looking forward to seeing FT Island, Big Bang and 2NE1 all on the same stage!  After last year’s K-Pop Night, I always regretted not listening to FT Island earlier, so this is my chance!!!

Now my wishlist for live Korean groups and solos gets longer and longer…MC 몽 for one, 은지원 for another, or even better Clover! 지원’s new project group.  I’m totally taken by their sound and have been listening to the album endlessly.

So who’s going to fulfill my dream line-up?

I keep going back to the Albeo theme, the one you’re seeing now, the pinky one with colourful swirls. Yes, because deep down inside, nicthegeek is a aegyo** little girl ^_^

Also, I realise that reading on dark screens (no matter how cool they are), especially on a laptop, is the suck.

* Talking Cock describes sian as A wonderfully concise Hokkien adjective which conveys boredom, weariness, frustration and emptiness. The English equivalent would be “ennui”. Yes that’s it exactly.

** Find the description of aegyo or 애교 here.  It basically means deh, which Talking Cok (again!) describes as A Hokkien term used to describe gooey, childlike and coquettish behaviour by women designed to elicit sympathy or pampering by men. The 애교 description makes it sound better, IMO.

And it’s getting harder…but I love that I can catch a few phrases here and there while watching K-dramas! w00t!

For the past 2 weeks, 선생니님 has been covering past tenses…ㅆ어. that has been fine so far. I found it easier than the “please새요 ” lessons.

we’re coming to locations and directions next, 오른쪽 and 왼쪽, which I’ve already learnt from MC몽’s song!

I’m thinking of signing up for one more lesson a week, that concentrates more on conversation. Should I?

oooh I almost forgot , we have had homework last week and this week. Last week I had to write a 5-liner 일가 entry.  This week, I have to describe 내 방.

I don’t know what drives a 32 year old man, in his prime, a popular actor, to suicide. I don’t know if the stress they face is so much so that they would rather leave behind their family and friends to escape it. I hope he has peace now, and I hope his family and friends will find also find peace with his leaving, someday, somehow.

Before that it has been mainly about identifying the consonants and vowels and how to read them.  Lessons 7 and 8 started on grammar.

7 was mainly about introducing yourself.  (Let’s see if I can get the Korean IME to work…) 안녕하새요? My name is… I am a occupation. I work … Nice to meet you. 만나서반갑습니다.

And then there was a lot of this , that, the, here and there. (ok, the Korean IME is pissing me off ^_^)

So, now I’m looking forward to lesson 9 and 10, and then *drum roll* Elementary 2, where we’ll learn how to count.  Hello, kindergaten year 2!!

Moving on. Lesson 3. Things are starting to get interesting. We got into the final (hopefully) part of the Korean ‘alphabet’, Batchim, or Final Consonants.

Most of the lesson was fine, especially if you can read all the consonants and vowels put together.  The confusing part was when words ended with 2 batchim, and then there was the linking of words.

I liked that part about linking of words. It kind of makes you sound very Korean when you start linking Korean words up together

Moving forward a bit in the textbook, it seems that at the end of 10 lessons, I’ll only be able to read and write and listen after a very basic fashion. Mdm Jang, the teacher, also confirmed that we’ll only learn how to speak in sentences, and even count in numbers (both traditional and Sino-Korean), if we sign up for Elementary 2.

I wonder if I’ll ever be able to read Korean as fast as MC Mong can do it .

nothing great, just 10 lessons at the local community centre. my son saeng nim is Mdm Jang, and she’s a pretty interesting teacher, keeps the teaching lively.

So today was lesson 1: A short history of Hangeul, and then 19 consonants.
