New tag? Mineral Mondays?

I’m not looking to become some sort of makeup blogger, but having (finally!) discovered mineral makeup, it’s no point just saving up my thoughts in Evernote, is there?  And apologies first to friend/s who still read this and have zero interest in makeup.  Come back later this week for more normal daily blogs 😀

So I know mineral makeup has been around for a long time, and I think many makeup bloggers and gurus got into them maybe in the late noughties? But I’ve never heard of them or tried them till late last year.  Starting with a Bare Minerals Refillable Buffing Brush, I finally discovered something that was pretty okay for my skin, and so have been going around trying to discover new products.  Normal loose powders or even compact powders applied with a sponge (new!) make me break out, and mattifying ones even more badly. I’m just too oily to even risk liquid foundations and BB creams, especially in our crazy hot weather.

I know I know, the fad for mineral makeup is long since dead, mineral makeup isn’t the purest form of makeup around, there are minerals and stuff in it that people are allergic to or make them break out really badly. But hey, it’s good..for me…I’ve been using it for more than half a year, and still have not encountered anything bad yet. I’m not recommending it, just blogging about it.

So other than Bare Minerals, which I actually quite love only they’re rather on the costly side, the other brand that used to be highly recommended is Everyday Minerals, and their free 7-piece sample kit (just pay for shipping), so being Singaporean and loving freebies, I mosied on over and tried it out for myself.  Here’s the samples.

From L-R: Semi-Matte Olive Medium, Semi-Matte Medium Tan, IT Golden Medium, Matte Medium Beige, Matte Light Medium, Everyday Bronzer, Finishing Dust. (erm sorry for the bad job in grabbing images, Evernote doesn’t have the ability to resize images by pixel.)

Semi-Matte – Olive Medium (For medium to tan olive complexions with yellow undertones).

My note: It’s the 8th darkest shade in Semi-Matte. Actual colour is a lot more dull brown, like sandy/rocky brown.  Tried out on 24th June, hot sticky day about 35degC.  Looked slightly more tanned than usual, lol. I also thought I started oxidising even before finishing eyeshadow.  But still looked not too awful dark at the end of the day.  Maybe I can try it out as a bronzer and try to slim my triple chin and neck with it 😀  Also, maybe because it’s hot and humid, I didn’t like the texture all that much, perhaps because I’m used to BM being so matte and dry.

Semi-Matte – Medium Tan (For medium to tan complexions with golden undertones)

My note: it’s the 4th darkest shade in Semi-matte.  I don’t think this will suit me, since Olive Medium already makes me look slightly more tanned than usual.  Again maybe I can try this out as a bronzer.

IT Base – Golden Medium (For light to medium complexions with yellow and olive undertones)

My note: it’s the 2nd darkest shade in IT.

Matte Base – Medium Beige (For medium complexions with peach and pink undertones)

My note: 13th darkest shade in Matte.  It’s more for pinky skin though, so I doubt if this is for me.

Matte Base – Light Medium (For light to medium complexions with yellow and pink undertones)
Everyday Bronzer (Everyday Bronzer has light-reflecting qualities so it gives skin a luminescent glow)
Finishing Dust (Everyday Minerals Finishing Dusts are translucent powders that serve to set your makeup and get rid of excess shine. They are suitable for all skin shades, from Fair to Light to Medium to Dark.)

Thoughts after the 1st try: Looking at the base colours side by side (first 5 colours), the first one already makes me slightly more tanned than I usually like, so it might seem that I’ve made all the wrong choices in picking out colours.  I have to say that pictures and colour shades on the EM website are really misleading, which is not great because it’s makeup after all.

Also, after using Bare Minerals Matte (Fairly Light) and Ready (Neutral) foundations, the Semi-Matte from EM doesn’t seem to be as oil-absorbing so it made me slightly uncomfortable after only 15mins. Of course, today seemed to be the hottest and most humid day so far this year.  The one thing is, BM Matte and Ready do look slightly cakey if I don’t bother to buff buff buff, although it could partially be due to the light shade I chose (just erring on the too light for me side), and to them being very matte, while EM looks slightly more natural.

Will try to get another sample kit again, this time with lighter shades.

Sunny skies!

Sunny skies are back! Looks like the cloud seeding or whatever methods they’ve taken to combat the haze is working for now!  I’ll try never to take days like this for granted again 🙂

Back Again – The Haze edition

several years later, when our generation of people start to die, they’ll do an autopsy on us and discover black unnamed substances solidified within our lungs, each and every one of us, same substances, and DNA tests would date these substances back to June 2013.

Yup, the haze is back and with a major vengeance. It’s been a regular happening since ’97 or so, when Indonesian farmers would prepare their lands via a slash-and-burn method (cheaper, faster, better. Really! Secondary school geography lessons! I still remember them!).  The smoke from the major fires would then be blown over to Singapore and some southern states of Malaysia, resulting in a month or so of haze. This also always happens during the hottest and driest months of the year, so there’s not much rain or wind to clear the air.

This year, it’s worse. Historical records showed a high of 226 on the PSI (Pollutant Standard Index) scale in ’06 or so. This year, scarily, the PSI just went on shooting up, from 200+ during the middle to the week, to 371 on Thursday and 401 on Friday. The populace are even more concerned about this than I remember back during the SARS period.  At 401 this morning, the roads around my area were eerily empty at 8am. Keyboard cowboys and warriors have taken the internetz and overloaded us with memes of every sort. N95 masks are sold out island-wide, profiteers are sprouting up everywhere, trying to make a killing of 200%-300% profit off the masks. Normal medical masks are useless.

Unfortunately, a lot of Singaporeans are also saying that about our leaders. While kind, hardy souls are doing the little that they can to give out water, cooling tea and masks, our leaders have asked us not to stop work, written a letter, held a press conference and refrained from fighting like small children.

Update: Apparently there are stocks of N95, but there are supply chain difficulties

I’m not a pappy-ist or pappy supporter of any kind, but really, just because the government didn’t give a stop-work order doesn’t mean they are incompetent. Just because they’re holding press conferences doesn’t mean they’re just sitting on their asses. Yes, they could go out there and give away N95 masks for free, but logistics takes times. It’s better than they just give away masks willy-nilly, and then be rendered as incompetent as well as resource wasters.

Yes, they could give a stop-work order or work-from-home order, but people calling for this just want a lazy day off from work. Stop-work or WFH orders don’t have to come from the government, duh! Look at your own employers or bosses. Why not out your company’s name and your bosses’ photo on FB and call them evil and incompetent and useless because they didn’t give you a free mask or tell you to stay home? Why not just force them to give you a Free Sick Day or Haze Day pass? Of course being the Sinkies that we are, there’ll be those who will then proceed to ‘spoil market’ by hanging out at JEM or the nearest shopping mall “because at home no air-con v suffocating“.  Right.  Your office no air-con, isit.

Maybe I’m just nauseous from too much haze. After it hit 400, 2 hours in the open made me feel like the time I smoked 2 packs of cigarettes in 1 day, for fun. But I’m sick of all this complaining.  When our G gives orders, we call them communist or socialist regimes who can’t leave well enough alone. When they don’t, they’re evil, incompetent and useless. When they don’t give free stuff, they’re evil. When they do, they’ll probably get called out for hoarding resources in the first place. Our G is not my favourite political party at any time, but if you want action, just GO take action on your own. If teenagers and youngsters can give away free water and cooling tea, so can you. If you don’t have money, then don’t. If you don’t have air-con at home, go to the nearest NTUC or air-con foodcourt or community centre or library or cinema.  If you’re not happy with profiteers, go LYNCH them or something. Stand in front of their fucking shop and direct would-be buyers to the next nearest cheaper source.  Don’t complain on the internet, then turn around and spend the $80 buying that box of 20 masks from them anyway.  Aunties and uncles v poor thing? Give them a mask and tell them to sit down for 5 minutes while you clear your own fucking tray at the food court instead of spewing chicken bones all over the table.

Seriously, if I were Miss Singapore, I wouldn’t wish for world peace. I’d just wish for a nation of non-complainers.

Back again!

Three years since my last post! 😮

But to be fair, I have been blogging on and off about other subjects at other blogs.  I was  “spring-cleaning” my wordpress account, and decided that Lucid Myth, with so many years of my history, just couldn’t go to waste.  So I shall try harder from now on!  Again! haha!  It’s just typing after all, it isn’t that bad.

So what’s been happening these past 3 years? Honestly it’s a blur now.  I’ve changed 3 jobs, attended umpteen interviews, picked up Korean language, passed the Basic TOPIK exam, watched Super Junior in concert twice, watched FT Island in concert once, made some new friends, lost one, travelled to Boston (once!), Taiwan (twice!), Hong Kong (once), Bintan (once) and [feather in my cap] went on my first trip to Korea, seen friends go into business and out of business, lost some weight, put back a lot more, turned 40, waiting for my progressive lenses (that’s old people glasses to you)

Edit: oh yes, wanted to add, I started messing about with makeup and beauty products at my advanced age 😛

Edit2: Also, life is not just about me me me. So in the past three years, SG politics is no longer a pappy monopoly, K-Pop took the world by storm, Facebook set out to conquer the world, so did Google, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

Not a very fruitful period, I would say. I think I’m ready for a shake-up in my life, the last few years have been too … peaceful. Maybe that’s why I’m back here. We shall see.
